When I learned that Maggie R., a runner profiled here awhile back, participated in this weekend’s Snowmans Half in Mt. Pleasant, I had to find out how it went given the extreme weather we’ve all been experiencing here in the Mitten lately. Here’s what she had to say about this event, which also features a 10K and 5K and is part of the Winter Warriors Race Series:
Thoughts from a Winter Warrior … I “raced,” I mean, made it through the Snowman Half Marathon. I went into it knowing it was not the conditions for any personal bests. But it became the biggest challenge I have conquered yet. And as always, I just HAMMER ON!
With headwind gusts up to 30 mph for 3-4 miles, drifted roads that once were ice—where even YakTrax or shoes with screws did not keep you from “skating”—we all made it through. Many of us did earn a handcrafted Snowman for age group awards. AND a badge of honor for toughness was earned….LOVE THE WINTER WARRIOR SERIES!!
And this was my reply to a friend who did not go to the race due to the conditions:
“You would have hated it. Snow covered ice. Deep snow drifts, crunchy snow, slushy snow, WINDY!!! It was one word. BRUTAL. But looking back now, I’m glad I did it.”

Thanks, Maggie, for sharing! Congratulations to you and everyone else who participated in this event. If you were there, let us know. How’d it go??
