Each year it seems more and more winter running events are cropping up in Michigan, and here in the northern parts I’m noticing a palpable uptick in the running scene. It’s an energy you can really feel, and I’m excited to not only witness it but also take part in it (more on that in a sec).
Here’s just a sampling of some newer things happening. These are definitely more northern Michigan-focused, given this is the area I call home, but I’d love to share what’s new in other parts of the state, too. If you’re part of a new running group (or even one that’s been around for awhile), please let me know. I’d like to eventually create a resource page here for this kind of information.

There seems to be more opportunities than ever before to go on organized group runs. If you live in the Grand Traverse region, or are visiting the area, and want to join local runners for an outing, check out the following:
- For the Run of It Traverse City. This group, started by Grand Haven runner Kathy Dale, recently started a Facebook page, too. This organization also has chapters in Grand Haven, Muskegon, Grand Rapids and Sault Ste Marie–each group has its own Facebook page. Next group run (in TC): This Sunday, Feb 3 at 8:30 a.m. The group meets downtown at Brew, 108 E. Front Street.
- Traverse City Track Club. Established in 1961, the TC Track Club is an event and advocacy based organization that encourages health, fitness, family recreation and competition through the sports of running and race-walking. Find this group on Facebook here. Next group run: 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, meeting at Brewery Ferment, 511 S. Union St. Refreshments after the run at the brewery. (I can attest to this brewery’s awesomeness–yes, I may be a tad biased, it is my brother and sister’s business.)
- EXCELerate/Endurance Evolution Team. This program/team offers lots of benefits–injury assessments, group runs, monthly clinics, among other cool things–with paid registration. Check out this group’s Facebook page here. Several of my friends, including Cassy and Joel, are on this team and really enjoy it.
Do you run with a group? How often do you meet up?
What’s the running scene like in your community?
