Nearly a decade ago, while on an everyday run in my neighborhood, the idea of Michigan Runner Girl came to me. At the time, knowing only that I wanted to mesh my newer passion for running with a my longtime career as a journalist, my thought was to create a space to share not only my wellness journey, but also the stories of others taking their own path toward good health. I decided I would start a blog.
I couldn’t have fathomed at the time that Michigan Runner Girl would evolve as it has, to become such an engaging and smart and kind community of individuals who believe as I do in finding ourselves through movement. And, in particular, doing so in our beautiful Michigan.
I’m so grateful for what this community—and the Michigan running community overall—has brought into my life. Running itself transformed me (continues to transform me), and all of you who read the blog, listen to the podcast, take part in conversations on the MRG Facebook page and over on Instagram, and participate in MRG events like weekend retreats and Ragnar teams, play significant roles in this adventure.
The evolution continues
I’m excited-nervous-thrilled to announce an all-new Michigan Runner Girl experience—another way we all can connect with one another amid the natural beauty we all love so much: an all-women’s trail race, here in northern Michigan.
Imagine a day filled with running, with encouragement and cheering from fellow women who embrace movement, friendships and going after big (and small) goals – and who love Michigan’s scenic landscape just as much as you.
You’ll experience all of this – and more – when you take part in the inaugural Michigan Runner Girl Trail 10K & 5K on Sunday, August 4 in beautiful northern Michigan, near the shores of Lake Michigan on the picturesque Leelanau Peninsula.
This all-women’s event takes place in Leelanau’s wine country, on the sprawling 45 North Vineyard & Winery property just outside the village of Suttons Bay and 20 miles north of Traverse City. You’ll experience the vineyard’s gorgeous trails (created just for running, cycling and hiking). You’ll receive a sweet finisher’s medal and commemorative wine glass (and a wine pour, if you’d like one; we’ll have non-alcoholic drinks available, too).
Then sip, savor and celebrate your awesome accomplishment with so many other strong and amazing women!
We hope you’ll join us for the first-ever Michigan Runner Girl Trail 10K & 5K this Aug. 4 in northern Michigan. A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to Michigan-based environmental organizations. (More details to come on this!)
Our vision and mission for this race
Our Goal: To create a memorable, unique and engaging experience that connects like-minded women striving to continually embrace their individuality while becoming the best versions of themselves – as they define this to be – through movement. This event not only will serve as a celebration of women’s strength, our accomplishments and our quest for ongoing personal growth, it will honor our love of Michigan and our passion for living an endurance lifestyle amid an abundance of freshwater lakes, rolling countryside, cities and towns both vibrant and quaint, and forested trails. When we take care of ourselves, in body, mind, and heart, we are able to give back to what we cherish the most – our family and friends, our life’s work and purpose, and our communities. Nature – specifically, Michigan’s natural beauty – is our preferred backdrop and plays a pivotal role in helping us achieve this.

In the meantime …
I hope you check your summer calendar and consider signing up for this first-ever event. I really cannot wait to see you there. Please bring your girlfriends, your moms and your sisters and your daughters. Or come solo and get ready to make so many new friends. I will be there to cheer you on, to welcome you as you cross the finish line, to raise a glass to your amazing accomplishment, whether it’s your first trail race or your 17th.
I can’t wait to see you Aug. 4!
