5k Family Friendly

The Sweaty Yeti Run is a family friendly event, which initially was being planned by Kellie Barber and friends, in memory of Kellie’s sister, Christie Galvin, who died of colon cancer in 2014. During the early planning stages, Kellie, who had also been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, lost her own battle, nine months after her sister Christie.

The event is a 5K, followed by a One Mile Fun Run.

Kellie wanted our mascot to be a Bigfoot or a Yeti as she, Christie and Christie’s kids always were looking for the elusive creatures. Since it was decided that our event would be held on the second Saturday of July, as “sweaty yeti” event only made sense. Everyone knows what happens to a Yeti in Michigan in July.

The Sweaty Yeti Crew which includes Terry and Geri Barber (Christie and Kellie’s parents) has worked hard to carry out Kellie’s vision for a premier event, which now honors these two beautiful sisters who lived and loved life to the fullest. Their fighting spirit, positive attitudes, and good humor left indelible marks on the lives of many.

All Proceeds and donations will benefit the Barber-Galvin Memorial Scholarship Fund, a 5013c. Our Yeti is now well known across Northern Michigan and beyond. This scholarship funding event is truly a labor of love for all of our dedicated volunteers.
