February 17th, 10am – For those crazy runners who are willing to face 10-degree temperatures and 30-mph gusts off Lake Michigan — can you handle it?
The 8th annual Betsie Bay Frozen 5K, presented by Stormcloud Brewing Company, is taking place on Saturday, February 17, 2018. The 10 a.m. foot race begins at the Elberta scenic lookout and follows M22 around the beautiful Betsie Bay to the finish line in downtown Frankfort. It is a great way to get the entire family out and about on a snowy February day while supporting great community efforts.
Once again, proceeds will benefit water initiatives, including the Benzie County Water Festival’s student scholarship. As always, you can participate in the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) event as a run OR a walk. This 5k is open to ALL ages and is dog friendly for friendly dogs (with encouragement to find your own transportation to the start line, rather than the shuttle bus, if you bring your pooch).
Thanks to our presenting sponsor Stormcloud Brewing Company, professional timing will be performed by Endurance Evolution. With the help of our many partnering sponsors, finishing medals and shirts will be available for all participants. Additionally, awards will be given to the top male and female finishers in each age group, along with raffle prizes that have been donated by supporting sponsors and local businesses. Stormcloud will be hosting Learn-to-Curl sessions in the afternoon (sign up online) and music that evening at the pub with Abigail Stauffer.
Race-day registration will take place Saturday, February 17, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Frankfort American Legion Post at 206 Main Street, Frankfort, MI, 49635. Registration will have baked goods, donated by Crystal Cafe’s newest owners, and coffee, donated by Higher Grounds Trading Company. Restrooms and heat are also available inside the building. A bus will be available to shuttle runners to the start of the race in Elberta, courtesy of Frankfort-Elberta Area Schools and Benzie Bus.
Andrea Maxwell shares her love of the Betsie Bay Frozen 5k: “It’s a great event to look forward to in the doldrums of winter, and it is fun for the whole family! The crowd is not overwhelming, and the location is gorgeous.”
After the race, the Legion will be open for a short awards ceremony. Pre-registration race fee is only $20; race-day registration is $25. You can pre-register online at https://events.bytepro.net/betsie-bay with a credit card. Cash and check will be the only method of payment on race day; please make checks payable to BCWC (Benzie Community Water Council).
