As I take a self-imposed running break following my spring marathon and recent half marathon, to ensure a longtime comes-and-goes running injury heals, I decided one way to cope would be to turn to an expert—and share this conversation with everyone.

On the latest episode of the Michigan Runner Girl Show, I am joined by physical therapist and board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist Jeff Samyn. Jeff is a runner and a CrossFit enthusiast, and he works at Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center in Petoskey, Mich. He’s a regular contributor to the Petoskey News-Review. You can read one of his recent articles on maximizing mobility and the question of knee issues in runners here »

We talked about when to know you should take a break from running due to pain/discomfort (and why it’s so tough to actually admit this to ourselves!), the best ways to handle running breaks (both mentally and physically), and how to ease back into a routine. We also share reader comments from the Michigan Runner Girl Facebook page—many readers and listeners chimed in with their own stories of running injuries, running breaks, chronic pain, and cross-training ideas and lots more. Thanks to those who shared some truly interesting stories and encouraging been-there, done-that words of wisdom. {To listen to this show, click on the player above, at the top of this post}

Jeff also talks about a mid-summer race he’s involved with and that benefits Northern Michigan Cancer Crusaders. This race—the Bear River Crawl 5K in Petoskey—is hosted by Northern Michigan Sports Medicine. Definitely one to put on your calendar for next July!

Some of you may have noticed that the Michigan Runner Girl podcast took a couple of weeks off. The summer show release schedule will be a bit more sporadic as my awesome production team and myself enjoy summer in Michigan—and gear up for a full line-up of weekly shows this fall. Thank you for your patience, and thanks for continuing to support and listen to the show.

The Michigan Runner Girl Show is made possible in part by the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa
